Being is different than Wanting

This from the excellent Jim Geraghty at NRO Campaign Spot.

"All Statements From Barack Obama Expire... Or Just Disappear Entirely"

Apparently Obama is realizing the difference between wanting to be President and having to actually BE President. Since being briefed, many statements on his transition website have been pulled.

He hasn't kept a campaign promise yet (didn't he say he wasn't even going run in his first Senate term?).

A glimpse of our dismal future?

  1. Several thoughts come to mind about Change.gov.

Transparency and oversharing ala Web 2.0 are not necessarily compatible with the classified information and state secrets. The site is an overreaction to the current president's style and degree of information dissemination.

Clearly Obama's team was working far in advance on this site i.e. pre-election. This indicates a large degree of arrogance (although some could argue optimism) on their part.

The rapid disappearance of controversial policies from the site suggests to me that Obama has either not clearly thought out his policies or considered how he wants to articulate them. It also indicates that his oversight of the website development is minimal, which is unsettling. While a good team is always critical, the president should be the LEADER of the team. It reminds of the "child-driven" approach, where children "lead" the parents to the appropriate discipline/education strategies.

The right's scrutiny of the Change.gov site is critical, given the rapidity at which the issuances disappear from the site after criticism surfaces. If Obama feels compelled to post this level of detail, then micro-management and criticism are perfectly justified.
