Comparing Chile to Haiti

This is an interesting article comparing the effects of their two earthquakes to each nation - Chile and Haiti. Chile was ready for quake, Haiti wasn't

The most telling point...
Chile is wealthier and infinitely better prepared, with strict building codes, robust emergency response and a long history of handling seismic catastrophes. No living Haitian had experienced a quake at home when the Jan. 12 disaster crumbled their poorly constructed buildings.
I would argue that encouraging developing nations to rise out of poverty through infrastructure, manufacturing, cheap energy, and trade agreements is the best way to improve the Human Condition for all humanity.
