Isn't This A Good Thing?

I thought that liberals and environmentalists were against things like Big Box stores and large corporate chains? I thought they wanted us to live a "simpler" life.

So why is this article about Detroit no longer having a single chain grocery story so bad?

I would imagine that the opportunity to make Detroit the next Greensville would be doubly sweet for liberals and environmentalists - a real I-told-you-so opportunity for them to transform the Motor City into the Stone Village.

This is why I'd rather celebrate Human Achievement Hour than Earth Day. This is why bankruptcy protection would have been better than this auto bailout. This is socialism kills.

But Detroit is also an opportunity for those who believe in the creative destruction of capitalism. The city is struggling but like a tree that falls in the rainforests, its death has opened space for other, smaller, organisms to come into the sunlight and thrive.

Decent Capitalists should be fighting for a chance to save Detroit, if their businesses can take root and thrive, then they will win, Detroit will win, and Capitalism will win.
