Dowd Gets an F in Home Economics

Maureen Dowd is out of her mind.

This article - Washington Chain Saw Massacre - is pretty much one of the more idiotic ones coming from Dowd and that's saying something. But I have no need to fisk its stupidity since this repulsive quote below does all the heavy lifting for me:
If the scariest thing in the world is something you can’t understand, then Americans are scared out of their minds about what is happening in America.
Apparently Dowd believes every adult American has failed both basic math and home economics because she believes we're basically all too stupid to understand that Congress is spending more money than it has and borrowing more money than it can repay.

Her position seems to spring from the idea that nothing in the average American's daily life can make them understand the concept of not spending more than you take in.

But Down is unhappy just insulting your intelligence. She swings for the TEA Party with this as her theme:
Just as horror films moved from niche to mainstream in the late-’70s, with successes like “Halloween” and “Alien,” the Tea Party moved from niche to mainstream.

Tea Party budget-slashers didn’t sport the black capes with blood-red lining beloved by the campy Vincent Price or wield the tinglers deployed by William Castle. But in their feral attack on Washington, in their talent for raising goose bumps from Wall Street to Westminster, this strange, compelling and uncompromising new force epitomized “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and evoked comparisons to our most mythic creatures of the night.

They were like cannibals, eating their own party and leaders alive. They were like vampires, draining the country’s reputation, credit rating and compassion. They were like zombies, relentlessly and mindlessly coming back again and again to assault their unnerved victims, Boehner and President Obama. They were like the metallic beasts in “Alien” flashing mouths of teeth inside other mouths of teeth, bursting out of Boehner’s stomach every time he came to a bouquet of microphones. (Conjuring that last image on Monday, Vladimir Putin described America as “a parasite.”)
Talk about fear-mongering, Maureen

She goes on and on with her ad hominen attacks on TEA Partiers but really she doing the intellectual-equivalent of sniffing her own fingers. Her delusional writing in this article has been fisked by far better writers than I, so I'll end with my on ad hom. It is lame, and more than a litte gross.

Steve Wynn Was Right!

Latest from Mr. Murray (in American Spectator)
Steve Wynn Is Right An Excerpt below but read the whole thing:
Legendary entrepreneur Steve Wynn (who usually supports Democrats) put it bluntly a few days ago, when he said: "[T]his administration is the greatest wet blanket to business, and progress and job creation in my lifetime. And I can prove it and I could spend the next three hours giving you examples of all of us in this marketplace that are frightened to death about all the new regulations, our health care costs escalate, regulations coming from left and right… And it makes you slow down and not invest your money."

Wynn is right. If we want Americans to get back to work, we must tackle overweening government now. A recent survey by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that 64 percent of small businesses will not hire anyone in the next year. The reasons given all concern government: taxation, regulation, and the threat of new legislation.
Then don't forget to get a copy of his latest book, Stealing You Blind: How Government Fat Cats Are Getting Rich Off of You!

Single Income Married = Less Taxes

From the inestimable Ann Althouse:
"The entire two-income trap... is actually a two-income tax trap..."

Explains Todd Zywicki, correcting Christopher Caldwell, who was explaining Elizabeth Warren.
The 2-income family gives a shocking amount of the extra money they scramble to earn to the government. I'm no tax expert, but my suspicion is that this happens because liberals like more taxes and conservatives like subsidizing the traditional family with a stay-at-home parent. Put those 2 forces together and we get the (perverse?) burdening of the 2-earner family.

Why don't more couples do the math and figure out that they should not do all that extra work for the government? Life is so much simpler with the 1-earner family, and the spouse who doesn't bring in the dollars can provide great economic benefits by directly performing work that would otherwise have to be paid for, most notably child care. Since this economic benefit isn't taxed, it's a double benefit. Instead of buying inferior childcare (or other services) with after-tax dollars, you perform the work that is worth that much money, and you're not paid, so you don't pay taxes on the value it represents.

When I went to junior high school, we girls were required to take a course called "Home Economics," but it was just learning to cook and sew. I think young people should be taught a course called "Home Economics," which teaches a sophisticated analysis of the economics of living together and sharing money and work. But perhaps the government, through its schools, does not want to reveal the amazing secrets of legal tax avoidance. How much better to indoctrinate kids to seek the highest incomes they possibly can achieve! That is the government's strategy for raking in the most most taxes. And it works so well. The liberal teachers support the ideology of women working and don't want to tip off young people that the traditional 1-earner family is an excellent approach to personal wealth. And the liberal legislatures don't want to alleviate the tax-burden on the 2-income families, because they love raking in the tax money.

As the USDA noted in a report on gasohol in 1986: ethanol "cannot be justified on economic grounds" and "had no long-term prospect for survival without massive new government assistance." More recently, the Congressional Research Service noted in a report last October that if the entire all-time record U.S. corn crop of 2009 was used to make ethanol—it would only replace roughly 18 percent of national gasoline use. "Expanding corn-based ethanol to significantly promote U.S. energy security is likely to be infeasible," the researchers wrote.
