International Terror Alert Statuses
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats, and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940, when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance". The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards". They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender". The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing". Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides".

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs". They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile, and as usual, are carrying out pre-emptive strikes on all of their allies "just in case".

Canada doesn't have any alert levels.

New Zealand has raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA". Due to continuing defense cutbacks, New Zealand has only one more level of escalation,
which is "I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!", "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is cancelled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

Bill Quick's Predictions

All these seem plausible....

Happy New Year 2011!
Predictions:

1. Hillary will leave the Obama administration.

2. Attorney General Eric Holder will leave the Obama administration.

3. Germany will pull out of the Euro.

4. The Yen will collapse.

5. Sarah Palin will begin her run for the White House.

6. Mitt Romney will not.

7. Nor will Mike Huckabee.

8. The housing market will collapse again, and take several major financial institutions down with it this time.

9. California will experience what would be called “sovereign default” if it were an independent nation.

10. There will be an effort to recall Jerry Brown - from the left!

11. Major rioting will hit Los Angeles as the city, county, and state drastically scale back welfare programs at every level.

12. Mike Bloomberg will begin a run for the White House. Within three months he will end it.

13. The Supreme Court will strike down the individual mandate requirement of Obamacare after taking up the case on an expedited review basis, at the request of all sides.

14. The City and County of San Francisco will file for bankruptcy.

15. Gold will break $2000 an ounce.

16. There will be a successful “Black Swan” (who could possibly have imagined?) terrorist attack on the American heartland. The Obama administration will attempt to impose draconian new security measures. These will be rejected by Congress.

17. Obama’s personal popularity will sink below 40%. His job approval ratings will sink below 30%.

18. At some point, the House of Representatives’ approval ratings will be higher than President Obama’s.

19. Iran’s President Ahmajihadi will be assassinated.

20. North Korea’s current iteration of Dumb Leader will be replaced, not by his son, but by a military junta. Tensions in that part of the world will cool.

21. Militant Islamic terrorists will set off a nuke - in Russia.

Happy New Year

Personally 2010 has been a roller coaster of amazing highs - spending the night in Cinderella's Castle - and profound lows - my father's death. Just two examples.

But life and the years go on. I will always treasure the memories not only of the past years events both happy and bitter but also the support the readers of Shout First have given me. I am grateful for the positive experiences and even the negative ones. My husband had a bad health scare but it revealed a medical condition that he is now receiving treatment for. Ultimately a good thing.

Thank you. And it is my heartfelt and fervent wish that everyone, everyone have a brighter New Year filled with good fortune, love and peace.

Tobacco's popularity created a large demand for pipes that were typically made in London using white clay from Dorset, along England's southern coast. Interested in the lucrative new industry, investors in the Virginia Company sought to add pipemaking to its trades and sought out adequate clay from the surrounding area.

Settlers, Kelso said, were under "tremendous pressure" to give investors the instant gratification they needed because "they put so much money into it," and didn't want to lose their lifeline to England. Colonists tried different trades such as silk making, glassmaking, lumber, sassafras and tar, with no financial success.
